Guatemala Conquers the World: Villa Bokéh and Casa Palopó Receive the MICHELIN Keys

In a night that will go down in the history of Guatemalan tourism, Villa Bokéh and Casa Palopó received in Paris the most coveted recognitions in global hospitality: the MICHELIN Keys.

Villa Bokéh, the hidden estate nestled among Antigua’s volcanoes, earned two MICHELIN Keys. Casa Palopó, the colorful and art-filled retreat overlooking Lake Atitlán, received one MICHELIN Key. Both properties, part of Grupo Alta, are the first in Guatemala — and among the first seven in Central America — to receive this prestigious honor.

«When we started this journey, many asked if Guatemala could compete with the world’s top destinations,» recalled Nancy Cifuentes, leader of Grupo Alta. «Today, the answer is written in Paris: Guatemala not only competes — it shines in its own light.»

The MICHELIN Keys:
The New Standard of Luxury

This recognition is the hotel equivalent of the world-famous MICHELIN Stars awarded to the best restaurants across the globe.

Each property is evaluated anonymously under five criteria: excellence in design, quality of service, personality, value for money, and connection with the local environment.

Two MICHELIN Keys recognize an “exceptional stay” — hotels with unique personality, expert management, and design that delivers a memorable experience unlike any other.

One MICHELIN Key distinguishes a “special stay” — a truly distinctive experience with a high level of comfort, strong character, and a concept that stands out within its category.

Outstanding Excellence Among Antigua’s Volcanoes

At Villa Bokéh, every detail tells a Guatemalan story — from handwoven textiles and local artworks to gardens that seem pulled from a fairytale. But what truly captivated the legendary MICHELIN inspectors was something deeper: authenticity.

«We’re not trying to be a European hotel in Guatemala,» explains Chef Marcos Sáenz, who brought his experience from Spain’s MICHELIN-starred Mugaritz to create something entirely new at Bokéh 3.1. «We celebrate who we are — with pride and without pretenses.»

The Lake That Captivated MICHELIN

Casa Palopó rises above Lake Atitlán like a canvas of vibrant colors. Here, Mayan culture isn’t decoration — it’s the soul of the place.

Chef Jorge Peralta, trained in some of the world’s best restaurants — including Paco Roncero’s two-MICHELIN-starred establishment — returned to Guatemala with one mission: to show that Guatemalan cuisine deserves a place in the global conversation.

«Every dish we serve is a love letter to Guatemala,» shares Peralta from 6.8 Palopó, where local ingredients are transformed into unforgettable experiences.

A Recognition That Goes Beyond Two Hotels

This achievement extends far beyond Grupo Alta — it’s proof that Guatemala holds a place among the world’s elite in luxury tourism. It validates that our artisans, chefs, designers, and hospitality teams can meet any international standard without losing their essence.

«Every time a guest admires a Guatemalan textile, every time a local artisan receives an order, every time someone discovers our country’s beauty through our hotels — we’re fulfilling our purpose,» reflects Cifuentes.

Grupo Alta thus becomes the only hotel group in Central America with two properties recognized by the MICHELIN Guide. Both hotels are also proud members of Relais & Châteaux, further positioning Guatemala as a must-visit destination for travelers seeking authentic and exceptional experiences.

An Invitation to the World

The doors of Villa Bokéh and Casa Palopó have always been open to those seeking more than just a place to sleep. Now, with their MICHELIN Keys, the world is invited to discover what Guatemala has to offer — beauty, authenticity, and limitless excellence.
